FREEDOM AND THE INCARCERATED BODY

“Until we are all free, we none of us are free,” said Emma Lazarus in the 19th century. In the 20th century, Fannie Lou Hamer said, “Nobody’s free until everybody’s free.” In the 21st century, these words are no less true. As an arrestee from the Line 3 pipeline resistance and a member of Support Committees for NoDAPL (Dakota Access Pipeline) political prisoners, Rev. Karen Van Fossan will share experiences of the criminal justice system and the prison abolition movement. Challenging punitive theology, ideologies of race and class, and mainstream narratives of fear, she will offer signs of transformation and practices for authentic freedom.
