The Best Home Ever – Meditations on the Four Brahmaviharas of the Buddha

Allen Blaich (Bly)

In Buddhist thought the Brahmaviharas-often translated as the divine abodes or the four immeasurables-are expounded as a means for the emancipation of the heart “if repeated, developed, made much of, made a habit of, made a basis of, experienced, practiced and well started”. These four; loving-kindness or friendliness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity combine qualities of the mind with attitudes of the heart as a way of dealing with the world just as it is. Are they possible in our world?

With the aim of providing some steppingstones into the practices that he spoke about, Allen Blaich would like to provide some resource material for those who attended the service, “The Best Home Ever: Mediatations on the Four Brahmaviharas,” in case they wished to pursue some of the more practical aspects of Brahmavihara contemplation. This link has a great variety of scripts and further helpful references and presents the issue in terms of a more secular viewpoint and refrains from some of the more esoteric and religious concepts.  https://positivepsychology.com/loving-kindness-meditation/
